Project Context & Client Need
An academic research team required a robust spatial analysis to demonstrate the correlation between rapid urbanization and the intensifying Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect in Lucknow District over a 20-year period (2003β2023).
Methodology & Data Sources
We utilized Landsat 5, 7, and 8/9 thermal and optical bands via Google Earth Engine. The workflow involved:
- Supervised LULC classification to quantify the expansion of the built-up area.
- Retrieval of Land Surface Temperature (LST) using standard atmospheric correction models.
- Calculation of the Urban Thermal Field Variance Index (UTFVI) to assess ecological evaluation.
- Statistical correlation modeling between NDVI, NDBI, and LST.
Deliverables
The client received a comprehensive map pack detailing decadal changes, statistical regression charts, and a detailed methodological report that formed the core of their peer-reviewed publication submission.
Key Insight
The analysis quantitatively proved that a 42% increase in built-up area corresponded directly with a 3.4Β°C increase in mean surface temperature in the urban core, providing irrefutable evidence of the UHI phenomenon in the study area.
